Can Fasthosts Website Builder really help you create a professional website in minutes? I tested its AI generator, editing tools, mobile layouts, and publishing process using a fictional cleaning business. The results were impressive in some areas and disappointing in others. Read on to see what I found.
Tip: Before publishing, check every AI-generated page for factual errors, missing business information, and unsuitable images. I found that some of the most serious problems were hidden behind an otherwise attractive design.
I evaluated Fasthosts Website Builder based on my experience creating, editing, and publishing a real website. My assessment follows the principles outlined in HostAdvice’s hosting rating methodology, with additional attention to AI-generated content accuracy.
The scores reflect the features I tested rather than every capability Fasthosts advertises. Customer support was outside the scope of this review.
| Test | Score / 10 | Why This Score |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing and Plans | 8.1 | Affordable entry price and included AI features, but promotional discounts lead to higher recurring costs and a 12-month commitment. |
| Features | 8.2 | Useful editing, SEO, mobile preview, and form tools, although some features require manual configuration. |
| Performance | 9.8 | Excellent 99% GTmetrix performance and 530 ms LCP, based on one desktop benchmark. |
| Ease of Use | 7.8 | Quick AI setup, simple editing, and easy publishing, but generated content needs substantial checking. |
| AI Content Accuracy | 6.6 | Relevant website structure, undermined by fictional employees, incorrect location information, and placeholders. |
| Overall Rating | 8.1 | Fast, accessible website creation with strong performance, but AI-generated business details need careful review. |
Fasthosts offers two main Website Builder packages, Essential and Complete. Both include AI setup, a free domain for the first year on eligible purchases, an SSL certificate, stock images, and SEO and image optimization.
The meaningful differences are how many pages you can create, how much storage is available, and the additional ecommerce and editing capabilities in Complete.
When I checked the plan page, the offers were:
| Plan | Promotional Price | Standard Monthly Price | Key Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | 1p/month for 3 months | £7/month thereafter | 10 webpages; 800 MB storage; personalized email |
| Complete | 50p/month for 6 months | £11/month thereafter | 350 webpages; unlimited storage; Exchange mailbox and shop tools |
Alt: Fasthosts Website Builder plan comparison showing Essential at 1p per month for three months and Complete at 50p per month for six months, followed by their standard monthly prices.
I chose Essential because I was reviewing the AI-assisted process for a straightforward business website, not setting up an online shop. Its allowance of 10 webpages and 800 MB storage should be sufficient for an initial small site.
The pricing is easy to misread if you focus only on the 1p headline. Fasthosts’ plan page advertises Essential at 1p per month for three months and then £7 per month. My actual basket specified ‘Pay monthly, 12 month contract.’
In other words, I was not buying a three-month website builder for a total of 3p and then automatically ending the service. I was beginning an ongoing purchase with an introductory discount.
The basket showed £0.01 due immediately, and it displayed a 30-day cancellation message. Fasthosts has different purchase and cancellation terms depending on the selected billing arrangement, so I would check the contract and recurring payment schedule before completing an order, especially if you expect to use the builder only briefly. I would also review the current terms on the provider’s site rather than treating the promotion as a guarantee for all new customers.
Beyond the advertised prices, there are a few important details to consider before purchasing:
Tip: My advice is to check the full recurring cost, cancellation terms, and optional add-ons before paying.
I started on the Fasthosts website rather than from a preconfigured demo account. That gave me a chance to see the real purchase and first-run experience, including the details a new customer might overlook while trying to get started.
Across signup and setup, I checked:
I selected the Essential plan and connected quickpreview.info, an existing domain already listed in the Fasthosts account. I then generated and edited BrightPath Cleaning, reviewed the mobile previews and SEO controls, published the website, and benchmarked the public homepage.
A website builder should do more than help you create an attractive website. Your visitors also expect pages to load quickly, respond smoothly, and remain visually stable. I wanted to see how Fasthosts Website Builder performed once the AI-generated site was published, particularly because BrightPath Cleaning’s homepage featured a large collage of cleaning images.
To test this, I ran GTmetrix against the published homepage on October 19, 2026. The test ran from London, UK, using Chrome 154 and Lighthouse 12.6.1.
The results were impressive. Fasthosts achieved a GTmetrix Grade A, with 99% Performance and 93% Structure scores.
Here is how the website performed across the key metrics:
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| GTmetrix Grade | A |
| Performance Score | 99% |
| Structure Score | 93% |
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | 530 ms |
| Total Blocking Time (TBT) | 89 ms |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | 0 |
| Time to First Byte (TTFB) | 96 ms |
| Fully Loaded Time | 1.1 seconds |
The 530 ms Largest Contentful Paint was particularly encouraging. This measures how quickly the largest visible content element appears, and the result was comfortably below Google’s recommended 2.5-second threshold.
Alt: GTmetrix performance report for the published Fasthosts Website Builder site, showing Grade A, 99% Performance, 93% Structure, 530 ms Largest Contentful Paint, 89 ms Total Blocking Time, and zero Cumulative Layout Shift.
Total Blocking Time was equally promising at just 89 ms, suggesting the page had very little main-thread blocking during loading. Meanwhile, the zero Cumulative Layout Shift indicated that visible elements remained stable rather than unexpectedly moving around.
I was also pleased with the 96 ms TTFB and 1.1-second fully loaded time. Considering that I hadn’t manually optimized the generated homepage, these figures suggest Fasthosts produces reasonably efficient pages out of the box.
There is one limitation to keep in mind. This was a single test from London, not continuous monitoring or a comparison across multiple locations. I also tested the HTTP version, so the results don’t independently confirm HTTPS performance.
A good website builder should remove technical work, but it should also make the path to the editor obvious. I followed the standard flow without contacting support. Here’s where the process felt simple and where it introduced extra decisions.
I began on the Fasthosts homepage and opened the Websites menu at the top. That menu separated Website Builder from Ecommerce Website Builder. This is a useful distinction for beginners: the standard builder is positioned around getting a business website online, while the ecommerce option is for a more shop-focused project.
Alt: Fasthosts navigation menu under Websites showing Website Builder and Ecommerce Website Builder as separate products.
After opening Website Builder, I reached a landing page promising AI-assisted site creation. It prominently advertised the 1p offer and included a Start Building button. From there, I could compare Essential and Complete before committing to a package. The route from the main navigation to plan selection was direct, with no complicated product configuration at this point.
I clicked Continue beneath Essential. Before reaching the basket, Fasthosts offered me SEO Manager, which included Marketing Radar, search optimization guidance, and keyword reporting. The offer was free for three months, then £11 per month. I could add it or click Continue Without SEO Manager.
Alt: Optional Fasthosts SEO Manager upsell offering three free months followed by £11 per month, with a visible Continue Without SEO Manager option.
I skipped the add-on because I wanted to evaluate the builder’s included tools before paying for a separate optimization service. This upsell is important to mention because the website builder plan itself already advertises SEO and image optimization. An additional SEO product may provide more guidance, but it should not be mistaken for a requirement to build a website.
The next page was the basket, where the deal was easier to understand than on the sales banner. A voucher was automatically applied, the Essential package displayed 1p per month for the first three months, and the order summary showed £0.01 including VAT due at checkout. Directly beneath the plan, Fasthosts identified the arrangement as monthly payments on a 12-month contract.
Alt: Fasthosts Website Builder Essential basket showing an automatically applied voucher, a £0.01 checkout total, and a 12-month contract billed monthly.
This was a positive aspect of the checkout: the amount due now, discount, and contract arrangement were all visible before I entered payment details. I would still prefer the minimum commitment to be more prominent before the buyer reaches the basket, given the heavy emphasis on the introductory 1p price.
After clicking Continue to Checkout, the process moved through account creation, billing details, and payment confirmation. The new-account form requested a full name, email address, and password, with a visible password-strength guide. If you already have a Fasthosts account, there was a Log In option instead.
Alt: Fasthosts account creation step with full name, email address, password fields, and password-strength guidance.
I then entered the required billing and contact details. The form validated the fields as I went, which made it clear when the information was ready to submit. The payment page displayed card payment as well as PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay options. That gave me a reasonable choice of methods rather than forcing a single payment route.
Alt: Fasthosts payment step showing a masked saved card, the £0.01 total, and the final Confirm and Pay Now button.
After payment, I saw an order-processing screen, received a confirmation email, and was redirected into the setup flow. I didn’t have to manually hunt for an activation link or return to the product list to begin using Website Builder. That immediate handoff helped the process feel continuous.
One part I would pay attention to during registration is the marketing-communications preference. The copy explained that users could opt out using a checkbox, so it’s sensible to read that preference rather than clicking through automatically. It didn’t prevent me from proceeding.
Verdict: Registration and Checkout
I found the signup organized and easy to follow. Inline validation helped with the account and billing forms, the checkout offered familiar payment methods, and the order led directly to product setup. The main friction wasn’t the forms; it was keeping track of promotional pricing and optional recurring extras.
The first setup screen asked if I wanted to register a new domain or use one I already owned. This is a good starting question: customers shouldn’t have to buy another domain simply because they are trying a new website builder.
Alt: Fasthosts Website Builder setup offering Register a New Domain or Use a Domain You Already Own.
I chose the existing-domain route. The wizard then showed unused domains in the Fasthosts account, with a search field and another option for a name registered through a different provider. In my case, quickpreview.info was available, so I selected it and proceeded with Use Domain Name.
Alt: Fasthosts domain selection screen listing the existing quickpreview.info domain and an option to use a domain registered elsewhere.
Having both routes available is helpful. If your domain is already in the account, you can select it rather than reentering DNS details. If the domain is held by another registrar, the separate option indicates that Fasthosts supports that path too. I did not test the external-registrar connection here, so I won’t make claims about how simple the necessary DNS changes are.
Before opening the dashboard, Fasthosts asked me to create an administrator username and password specifically for Website Builder. The username needed to be an email address, and the page provided another password-strength check. This was distinct from the earlier Fasthosts account registration.
Alt: Fasthosts Website Builder admin setup requesting an email-based username and a strong password before Complete Setup.
I don’t consider a second set of login details a major problem, but the distinction matters. A newcomer may assume their Fasthosts account password is also the builder password. The screen was clear about creating credentials for the website editor, so I knew this was an additional setup step rather than an error.
After completing it, Fasthosts opened the management dashboard for my selected domain. That completed the registration and initial domain setup, but not the website itself.
The dashboard identified my subscription as Website Builder Essential and showed quickpreview.info at the top. The main card contained an Edit Website button, an unpublished status, a test-domain link, and product connection information. View Website was not yet available, which made sense because I had not created and published a site.
Alt: Fasthosts Website Builder Essential dashboard for quickpreview.info showing Edit Website, Not published status, test domain, help guides, and optional marketing add-ons.
I liked that the dashboard gave me an obvious next action. It also linked to help articles on managing pages, choosing navigation items, and adding a cookie warning. Those are useful topics for a first-time site owner, although I still need to evaluate the documentation itself before judging its quality.
Below the main controls, Fasthosts promoted other services. I could see Marketing Radar starting at £1 per month, Ads Manager at £11 per month, SEO Manager at £11 per month, and Listing Manager advertised at £11.50 per month under a first-year offer. There was also a separate AI Receptionist promotion near the top.
None of those tools was needed for the initial domain setup. I would advise readers to finish building their website and understand what Essential already provides before adding subscriptions. The presence of several marketing upgrades makes the dashboard feel more commercial, even though the core Edit Website action remains easy to find.
Verdict: Initial Setup and Dashboard
Getting from the Fasthosts sales page to a usable builder dashboard was straightforward. I could complete the purchase, select an existing domain, create the editor login, and reach the next step without touching code or asking support. The clearly marked Edit Website button is a good starting point. My two reservations are the extra paid services promoted along the way and the need to read the 12-month billing commitment behind the headline discount.
With the signup finished, I clicked Edit Website to begin generating and editing a real test site. That’s where the builder’s strengths and limitations became clearer.
After selecting Edit Website from the Fasthosts dashboard, I reached a clean starting screen offering Start with AI or Start with a template. I chose AI because I wanted to see how much of the business website the generator could build from scratch, rather than judge a premade layout.
Alt: Fasthosts Website Builder start screen offering Start with AI and Start with a template.
The questionnaire had three steps: enter a business name, describe what the business does in one or two sentences, and select the pages to include. For this review I used BrightPath Cleaning, a fictional residential cleaning company serving Austin, Texas.
The page selector included Home, About, Testimonials, Contact, and Gallery. I proceeded with Home, About, and Contact, leaving Testimonials unselected rather than inventing customer reviews.
Alt: Fasthosts AI website setup showing Home, About, Testimonials, Contact, and Gallery page choices.
I appreciated how little technical knowledge the setup demanded. The trade-off was control: the prompt expressly asked for a short description of the business, not detailed layout requirements, so I expected to do some editing afterward. The website was ready for review in 21 seconds during this session.
Alt: Fasthosts AI generator displaying the completed BrightPath Cleaning design after 21 seconds.
Verdict: AI Website Generation
The three-question process was genuinely fast and beginner-friendly. In 21 seconds, Fasthosts produced a complete starting design, but the speed only measures generation, not how long it takes to make the result accurate and publishable.
The homepage opened with a large six-image collage of mops, vacuum cleaners, and cleaning supplies. Below it, the AI wrote “Sparkling Homes Start Here,” added a short Austin-focused description, and placed an About Us section beside another cleaning image. That was a usable visual direction, although the image-heavy hero consumed a considerable amount of the first screen and the layout still felt generic.
Alt: Generated BrightPath Cleaning homepage in the Fasthosts editor with a six-photo cleaning collage and About Us section.
Next I opened the Site Manager. My selected Home, About, and Contact pages were there, and I could move among them without returning to the setup wizard. That made the builder feel more like a normal multipage editor after the initial AI stage.
The page content, however, exposed the biggest weakness of my test. On About, the generator had added a six-person team grid with individual names and portrait photographs. I had not supplied any actual staff members or their identities. Even though the names and pictures looked presentable, publishing that section unchanged would be misleading for a real business.
Alt: AI-generated About page showing six named staff portraits that were not supplied as real business information.
The Contact page needed equally careful review. Its layout included an email-and-message form and a large map, but the business details showed placeholders such as “No address,” “No email,” and a sample UK telephone number.
More seriously, the map pointed to Bristol, UK, rather than Austin, Texas. A clean layout cannot compensate for an incorrect location on a contact page.
Alt: Fasthosts-generated Contact page showing an orange contact section, placeholder details, and a map centered on Bristol, UK.
Verdict: Generated Content
The AI assembled recognizable business pages quickly, but some of its details were unreliable. Invented staff identities and the wrong geographic location are not cosmetic flaws; they could damage a business’s credibility if published without review.
For an editing check, I clicked the homepage headline directly and replaced “Sparkling Homes Start Here” with “Professional Home Cleaning in Austin.” The text cursor appeared in place, and a compact toolbar provided formatting controls plus an AI Writer entry point. I did not have to open code or hunt through a separate content-management screen.
Alt: Inline heading editor showing Professional Home Cleaning in Austin replacing the AI-generated headline.
I also inspected the Contact form’s settings. The side panel let me specify its name, recipient email, subject line, post-submit page, displayed labels, button wording, and marketing-consent option.
This is useful for a small service business, but it is not an automatically configured lead-capture workflow: the recipient and related values must be entered correctly. I did not submit an actual inquiry or verify that an email arrived.
Alt: Fasthosts contact form settings showing email recipient, subject, post-submit page, labels, and consent options.
Verdict: Editing and Forms
The direct text edit was simple, and the form offered sensible controls. However, the generated form required manual setup before it could be trusted with customer inquiries, and delivery was not part of this test.
Before publishing, I used the built-in device previews. The mobile version switched to a hamburger navigation menu and rearranged the image collage to fit a narrow screen. The contact form also stacked its fields vertically. These are useful checks inside the editor, but a simulator is not a substitute for testing on several real phones and browsers.
Alt: Mobile preview of BrightPath Cleaning showing a responsive image collage and hamburger navigation.
Fasthosts also has a dedicated Site Settings area for SEO and optimisation. I found fields for site title, language, meta description, and keywords, along with an option to disable image compression. The interface explains that site-wide settings can be overridden for individual pages. These are helpful controls, although the keywords field is not a meaningful Google ranking advantage, and I did not perform a search-indexing test.
Alt: Fasthosts SEO and optimisation screen showing title, language, description, keyword fields, and image compression toggle.
I returned to the homepage after editing and clicked Publish. Fasthosts first asked me to confirm the destination, www.quickpreview.info, then displayed a publishing-progress message. The final dialog confirmed that the website had been published to that domain and offered an Improve my SEO button.
Alt: Fasthosts Website Builder confirming successful publication to www.quickpreview.info with an Improve my SEO option.
This was a smooth end to the workflow: the editor provided a clear Publish button, a domain confirmation, and a final success message. It also kept SEO optimization optional rather than preventing the site from going live. The later GTmetrix test confirmed that the public HTTP homepage could be fetched and measured. I have not separately verified HTTPS or tested whether the form submits successfully.
Fasthosts Website Builder makes getting started remarkably straightforward. I went from activating my Essential plan to generating a three-page website in just 21 seconds, without writing code or dealing with complicated setup procedures. Editing text, managing pages, and previewing the website were also relatively simple.
However, my testing revealed a few things you should know before relying on the AI-generated result:
What I liked most was how quickly I could move from the initial questions to a website I could actually edit. The problem is that the AI also made decisions I wouldn’t want a business owner to overlook, including adding fictional staff profiles and displaying a UK location for my Austin-based cleaning business.
Overall, I found Fasthosts Website Builder beginner-friendly for creating and editing a website. It’s particularly appealing if you want to establish an online presence quickly. Just allow time to review the generated content, correct inaccuracies, and configure essential business features before publishing.
After testing Fasthosts Website Builder, I found it particularly appealing for beginners who want to get a website online without coding or dealing with complicated setup procedures.
The AI generated three pages in 21 seconds, and I could edit headings, manage pages, inspect mobile layouts, and publish the website without much difficulty. The published homepage also performed exceptionally well in GTmetrix, achieving a 99% Performance score and loading fully in 1.1 seconds.
However, I wouldn’t recommend publishing the AI-generated website without reviewing it first.
The biggest concerns weren’t related to the editor itself. They came from the content the AI created. My About page contained six fictional team members, while the Contact page displayed a map pointing to Bristol, UK, despite my business being based in Austin, Texas. It also included placeholder contact information that would need replacing.
These inaccuracies could damage a real business’s credibility if left uncorrected.
I also found the Essential plan sufficient for creating a basic business website. You don’t need the more expensive Complete plan just to access AI website generation, although the promotional pricing and 12-month commitment deserve attention.
My recommendation: Fasthosts Website Builder is a good choice for freelancers, small businesses, and beginners who want a quick starting point. Its AI can save considerable setup time, but you should expect to review and refine the generated content before publishing.
If you’re comfortable making those adjustments, Fasthosts offers a straightforward building experience backed by promising website performance.

Yes. I changed a homepage heading directly inside the visual editor without coding. Fasthosts also provides page management, image controls, contact-form settings, SEO options, and responsive previews.
The generated website adapted reasonably well in my mobile previews. Its navigation collapsed into a hamburger menu, the image gallery rearranged into two columns, and the contact form fitted the narrower screen.
However, I would still review every page before publishing, particularly the placement of important content and calls to action.
Yes. I found settings for website titles, meta descriptions, keywords, image compression, and page-specific SEO overrides.
These tools help you manage basic SEO information, but you still need to review the content and configure appropriate titles and descriptions.
The AI generated my website in 21 seconds. After publication, the homepage achieved 99% Performance and 93% Structure in GTmetrix, with a 530 ms Largest Contentful Paint and a 1.1-second fully loaded time.
